SIALIC ACIDS SOCIETY
INTRODUCTION
Sialic acids are N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac), N-glycoloyl-
neuraminic acid (Neu5Gc), 3-deoxy-D-glycero-D-galaccto-nonulo-
pyranosonic acid (KDN), and their alkyl, acyl, and deoxy derivatives.
Sialic acid residues are located at the non-reducing terminals
in glycoconjugates, and which considered play important roles at
the cell surface as glycoconjugates, such as glycolipids, gangliosides,
and glycoproteins.
We start the study on sialic acids from 1978, based n the strategy "sialic
acid derivatives having good shape and good balance between hydrophilic
and hydrophobic parts should have various kinds of physiological
activities". We obtained a sialyl-transferase inhibitor (5-fluorouridine
derivative), and which was effective in the experimental lung metastasis.
Cholesterol derivatives have potent activity for the propagation
of neuritis. These results give notice to prepare novel medicines
for cancer and Alzheimer's disease. In conclusion, these results
provide a development of novel therapeutic or prophylactic treatment
for many kinds of diseases.
Recently, a new class of drugs related to sialyl LewisX was developed
as anti-inflammation and anti-cancer medicines. Another group designed
two potent inhibitors of influenza virus from sialic acid derivatives
.
Sialic Acids Society supports many kinds of projects showing
in the regulations of the society, mainly we supports symposium
and meeting about researches of sialic acids, in the frontier of
medical, pharmaceutical, agricultural, and engineering sciences.
From 1980, sialic acids society organized 22nd meetings and symposia
showing separate parts.
